Columbia Scholastic Press Association 3rd Place Personality Profile
1st Place in the Personality Profile category, Michigan Interscholastic Press Association
One of the best lessons I've learned as a student journalist is to focus on the interview first. If the conversation is fruitful, the story will come naturally. With this personality profile, I was capture my subject's voice and echo his excitement in my piece. And it worked - many students and teachers said that the piece captured Mr. Collins’ likeness very well. Plus, Mr. Collins sent this PDF to the New York Times crossword editor, Will Shortz, who asked for a physical copy of my article to keep in his library! (Which is pretty neat!)
Two of English teacher R. J. Fox's books to be produced as full-length feature films
National Scholastic Gold Medal Winner
Regional Scholastic Gold Key Winner
3rd Place in the Human Interest Feature category, MIPA
Mr. Fox, who used to work in media himself, told me that I was one of the best journalists he's met, student or professional. He has since let me teach a few lessons on documentary interviewing for his TV/Radio Production class.
