MIPA SUMMER WORKSHOP Summer 2018: The Bobby Hawthorne Experience was without a doubt a capital-E Experience and the highlight of my sophomore year summer. Many of my oft-repeated mannerisms and aphorisms as an editor were inspired by this session. I delighted in Mr. Bobby Hawthorne's sharp critiques and straightforward feedback.
I remember showing him what would become "Aftershocks" during a one-on-one in the hallway. He looked at me over his glasses and said, "No one in there can write like you do." And then handed me my laptop and told me to finish the story. I ended up winning an excellence award for "Best Writer." More importantly, I was reinspired as a storyteller.
Summer 2019: My apprenticeship at the Detroit Free Press coincided with MIPA 2019, but I still came up to camp with a former editor to support my advisor and staff!
MIPA ALL-STATE STUDENT ADVISORY COHORT I was eager to sign up for the ASSAC when Ms. Cyr, Ms. Hammitt and Mr. Flanagan debuted it last year as a platform to communicate and cross-collaborate with other representatives of student media staffs across the state. It was thrilling to meet up for pizza at the Michigan Daily and State News and share "relatable" stories with other editors. The ASSAC has helped me consider new angles, like the minimalism/maximalism debate in relation to color design on a page. As one of the original members, I've been happy to see our conversations grow on GroupMe (see images).
